Press Release Body: NEW YORK CITY, November 25, 2007 -- If a person is new to the City and finds it a challenge to understand the customs, language and how to keep more of his money in his pocket then How to Survive New York City for the Newcomer is the book of choice authored by Deborah Torbert, published by Mother's House Publishing, Colorado. Her first book signing at the Upper East Side prestigious Excelsior Athletic Club in September led the spate of personal appearances with Sirius' Wiseguy Show and the Joey Reynolds Show soon following. Torbert's current venue is Postcards from New York, an internet site that features unique aspects of New York like not seen elsewhere. In Postcards' feature Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Torbert showcases Mimi's Piano Bar/Restaurant on 52nd and 2nd where she did much of her research for How to Survive. Regulars and staff alike made her feel welcome when she first came to New York enough to shed her shyness for public singing. Now she is considered a regular. Just like Cheers, the Popular TV show now in syndication, Mimi's is a local haunt where everybody knows you and likes you anyway. The book's 7" x 4" format is small enough to fit in a breast pocket or slim purse. It offers practical information for the tourist, student or new resident. Written in conversational style, it is patterned after Torbert's discussions with new arrivals the book takes the reader through what a person needs to know beginning with how to order coffee. Publisher Jackie Haag of Mother's House said, "We only publish books that are unique and have a purpose. Torbert's style is very friendly and enjoyable to read. You feel you are having a cup of coffee with a friend while listening to information you need. It is refreshing." Torbert came to New York City from the West Coast right after the attack on 9/11/2001. During the succeeding years, she met people dealing with the same issues and having the same questions she had when she first came to New York. After meeting with tourists and newcomers in delis, on subway platforms and at Mimi's, she realized that she could pass along what she had learned faster if she wrote a book directed to these new people. She explained, "When I travel back to the West Coast, I invariably meet people who cannot wait to leave the city, that it did not meet their expectations. I feel so bad knowing that they could have totally enjoyed their trip here and want to return had they known what I tell them in my book. New York City is a too great a place to be misunderstood."
